My God is an angry judge

by i.burgess on December 15, 2009

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. (Col 3:5-7)

God’s wrath is coming. It is coming because I am unable to change my, frankly, perverted heart and mind. Paul was addressing believers who had left behind lives of immorality. My own depraved life seems to be growing. Though so are some of the more pure parts also.

God’s wrath is coming. And I welcome it. God is just, and it is right for him to raise his hand against me, against those earthly things. Because I don’t know how to put these things ‘to death’.

What would that look like? When I no longer desire to use people, seeking instead their best. When I stop serving my flesh, rejoicing in the love of God. When I no longer worship myself, bending my world to serve ‘Almighty Ian’.

But this is not a command to just me. Colossians was a letter written to the community of believers. Then this is a command to the community, not the individual.

Then my prayer is this: That the same Spirit who inspired and changed the Christian community then, would come amongst my community here, and change it in such a way that I would be transformed.

Peace
