Just to throw in another thought slightly off topic, if people are serving in the forces either because they've signed up or because they have been conscripted does this make them out of the reach of the church or Gods mission? I feel not. Having grown up in a forces family, where my Dad although never picked up a gun to shoot someone (just paper targets on boards, which is great fun) he served as an engineer its hard to say I completely disagree with the forces (not war please note) due to the fact it was and still is such a big part of my life.

Beverly: you raise an interesting point about conscription. Should the Church fight that? Should the church campaign to have forces conscription ended? I know it's not an issue in our country, but it is elsewhere.

Alex: You're right, it was ignorant of me to forget that. I'm glad we 'do faith' in community.

'Often times the father is absent, or mother is worried about her son.'

Hate to be a typical feminist theologian and everything, but you do know that women serve in the army these days? Maybe sons are worrying about their mothers... I know it is slightly off topic but I couldn't help myself ;) You can ignore this post again now :)

Love.

I don't believe that anyone who is filled with the Holy Spirit and has put their trust in Christ seeking to obey him as a disciple could or would even think it's OK to shoot someone. I go on the evidence of the bible and the evidence of the bible tells me that it is never ok to actively and knowingly choose to shoot someone (actually the bible tells me it is actively and knowingly wrong to even think about shooting someone!!! ) I would seriously examine any theology from any person who felt it was ok to shoot/burn/hang/or in any other way take the life of another human being because the foundation of that person's belief system is quite obviously flawed!

This has of course nothing to do with those people who are called up for national service and find themselves in a position of having to shoot someone because they are commanded to. Because obviously whether they think it's ok to do so is superseded by the command from a higher authority.

I've got no problem with disciples of Christ taking up alms (see Beverley's comment above). Arms though are a more controversial subject.

Let's turn this on its head, (or return to the original question of this post) Ian said:

"I just don't get how anyone who is filled with the Holy Spirit and has put their trust in Christ, seeking to obey him as a disciple can ever think it's ok to shoot someone.
Help me out here?"

So, Beverly. What do YOU think?

Ok so what's your problem. Your original statement says how do you cope with someone professing to be a disciple taking up alms - please help. Obviously you don't have a problem at all with men of violence when it comes to wholeheartedly agreeing with their writings so I don't see you have a problem do you?

For a start, the fact I disagree with Bonhoeffer in some areas does not in any way undermine the parts where I think he's spot on.

If it did, I would have to disregard Augustine, Calvin, Luther, Aquinas and many others who have made very valuable contributions to the Church over the generations.

Indeed, it's a logical fallacy to disregard someone's preposition because of something about their person which is completely unrelated to the argument. See <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem" rel="nofollow">'ad hominem'</a>
